The Civil Air Patrol is a civilian-run non-profit organization which also happens to be
the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force. Though operated by civilians, CAP
is heavily based on the military. Any United States citizen can join CAP, as either a
Cadet or as a Senior. To become a Cadet you must be younger than eighteen and be in or
past the sixth grade; to become a Senior, you must be eighteen years old or older. CAP
members engage in all sorts of activities: glider flights, leadership training, model
rocketry, free cadet orientation rides in CAP aircraft, and more (see the photos page for photographs from some CAP activities). Not
only that, but CAP members who obtain the General Mitchell Award may enter any of the
armed service branches at grade E-3, two full steps above other enlistees. All three of
CAP's missions are stressed with new members: Aerospace Education, Cadet Programs, and
Emergency Services. If you want to help out your community, become informed in aerospace
matters, or be trained to be an effective leader, then the Civil Air Patrol is for you.
There are two options to join the Civil Air Patrol. If you do not live in the Fresno area,
then visit National CAP or call toll-free
1-800-FLY-2338 (that's 1-800-359-2338) to find the Civil Air Patrol unit nearest you. If
you live near Fresno, though, and want to join Fresno Flight 112, then click here for more information.
